VISIT TO CITIZENS BANK PARK

February 18, 2009

It was a cloudy and sometimes rainy day, but that didn't dampen the spirit or enthusiasm of the 20 or so softball'ers that made the trip. What was billed as a 90 minute tour evolved into a 2 1/2 hour session, including lunch in the dining area. Many thanks go out to John Duffin for his work in arranging this event, and for all of the photos he snapped, several of which are shown below. Don't forget to double click to enlarge!

IN THE NEWS

The League received a full page spread on the front page of the LIFESTYLE section (Section B) of the February 17 edition of our local paper, The Reporter. There was an extensive news story and lots of photos. Click here to link to the on-line edition of the paper. Click here to link to a pdf version of page B1. Click here to link to a pdf version page B6, which contains another photo and the continuation of the story. Click here or here to view the video.

The players of the Montgomery County Senior Softball League are extremely grateful to Univest for their help in furnishing a portable defibrillator for use in emergencies.

"Age is a case of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it don't matter."

Satchel Paige

The Montgomery County Senior Softball League is a Slow Pitch League that had its beginnings in March of 1999. It is now going into its eleventh season with eight teams, Magics, Marshals, Marvels, Maulers, Mavericks, Minutemen, Mongrels, and Mustangs, and the travel team, the Marauders.

The league is for male players 60 years of age and older, whose skills may not have kept pace with their enjoyment of the game.

The League is registered with the amateur Softball Association of Pennsylvania (ASA) and abides by their playing rules with modifications for our senior league and players. Some rules have been softened to protect the players such as: no base stealing; no sliding into bases; no metal spikes; and to avoid collisions, the League uses two first bases, and two home plates.

Everyone plays and bats. The league emphasis is on safe play, having fun, demonstrating sportsmanship, getting some exercise, having some laughs, enjoying camaraderie, and winning, in that order of importance. We don't worry about dropping or misjudging fly balls, striking out, missing ground balls, bad throws, or having back to back senior moments, as we have all done these things in the past, and will likely continue to do so in the future. We are thankful we can still play for the love of the game.

Membership contribution is $65.00 per player per season and this pays for balls, bats, insurance coverage, postage, and other league expenditures.

CHECK ON THE STATUS OF THE FIELD

If the weather is, or has been rainy, or some other situation arises, you can find out if the games are going to be played, by calling the following number:
267-765-3599.

Then listen to the commercial, and when prompted to enter the team number, punch in:
61741.

You should then hear a message informing you as to what's happening.

Many thanks go to Joe Juba for handling this!
